I hope that this series gets better but it wasn't all that great for me. This is about an out-of-work, divorced man who is part of a mystery club in which he has to set up a mystery for the club members to participate in and solve. But as part of the mystery he opens up an private investigator's office with working phone and business cards, and surprise, gets an actual client. Its all a bit fishy and too simplistic for me but as its a first book, it might just get better if you have more patience that I did. Perhaps I had higher hopes for the story because I know Little Tokyo and expected something more polished and creative, but that's me.Product details

I'm fond of Dale Furutani's work. I wish he'd do more.
If you are looking for a more fiesty oriented novel with some guts this one's not for you. Occidental detective stumbles into a crime and solves it,. Interesting was the REFERENCE to Nisei life in the states.
I have read five Furtani novels and I find them all fast moving with interesting twists I am starting my sixth novel now and will probably take a break, But I heartily recommend the books they are well researched and the characters come alive to me.
I was so grateful the book ended. I had a lot of trouble with the hero being such a super-man. If it was a truthful writing, the hero would have been the one to get killed all the time, NOT everyone else.
If you are looking for a nice and easy Miss Marple-esque kind of story, this one's for you. If you are looking for a more action oriented novel with some grit, such as I usually like to read, this one's not for you. Accidental detective stumbles into a crime and solves it, of course. Interesting was the insights into the Japanese sub-culture in California and Japan and their history. Other than that I am not sure if this was supposed to be a hommage to Marlowe and Spades or a poor copy. Once again if you are looking for "Agatha-Christie-on-a-budget", maybe not bad at all.
Difficult to recommend this book. Its plot is built around browbeating all to whom it may apply regarding the difficulties of growing up and living as a United States citizen of Asian descent. The evils of a toxic white society. I would not presume to argue the authors points. I purchased the book as a mystery and to be entertained and for me it falls short on both counts. On a positive note, I whole heartedly recommend the Matsuyama Kaze trilogy. Very entertaining.
Ken Tanaka is pretending to be a detective for a mystery party he's hosting. He sets up a fake detective's office as a prop when a beautiful blonde walks in and hires him for a job. The set up is deliberately reminiscent of Raymond Chandler, but the author weaves in a hefty dose of real local history to the ground the story in the modern day.
