Set during the height of World War II, The German examines the effect a series of ritualistic murders has on a small, Texas community. A killer preys on the young men of Barnard, Texas, leaving cryptic notes written in German. As the panic builds all eyes turn toward a quiet man with secrets of his own, who is trying to escape a violent past.
Ernst Lang fled Germany in 1934. Once a brute, a soldier, a leader of the Nazi party, he has renounced aggression and embraces a peaceful obscurity. But Lang is haunted by an impossible past. He remembers his own execution and the extremes of sex and violence that led to it. He remembers the men he led into battle, the men he seduced, and the men who betrayed him. But are these the memories of a man given a second life, or the delusions of a lunatic?

Superb novel. This one was right up my alley. An original haunted anti-hero, check. Bloody murders, check. Southern Gothic vibe, check. Hardboiled mystery, check. It is all there for me. This book has been sitting on my shelf for quite a while, but I finally decided to pick it up, and I only regret it took me so long. There are a string of murders of young men in a small Texas town where there are many German immigrants during WW2. There is a murder mystery element to the story as the Sheriff of the town tries to solve these gruesome murders.
What I enjoyed most about the book, besides it being a great horror story, is the thought-provoking narrative about xenophobia and other forms of bigotry. The German explores the narrow line between patriotism and xenophobia. It also explores the dangers and conflict of homosexuality in a small town during the 1940’s. Evil feels pervasive throughout the story and can come from any character including the “good” ones. While there is an underlying supernatural narrative the real evil is amongst humanity.
Lee Thomas is quickly becoming a writer who has my full attention and I look forward to furthering my way through his catalog.

The German (Audible Audio Edition) Lee Thomas Jeff Schine Lethe Press Books Reviews
This was a good read, the characters are well developed and believable. I was expecting the typical gay novel, but was surprised by what I read. Looking forward to more from Lee Thomas
This book was wonderfully terrifying and poignant. The author has a distinctive and seductive voice that draws a reader into the mysteries of Barnard, Texas.
I've not long since finished reading The German by Lee Thomas. I loved it. The narrative is bold, compelling and absorbing. I read it as a study of prejudice and hate, of base instincts and violence. There are elements of the fantastical amid the disturbing insights into human nature. Where did Ernst Lang really come from? What is his true history? Is war just an excuse for man to exercise his violent and bestial tendencies? How quick are we as humans to point the finger, think the worst, look for a scapegoat and label, hunt down and destroy that which is different to ourselves or we don't understand? An intelligent book and thought-provoking book and one I will read again. I'm sure I read the word 'horror' written in connection to the book, which made me think twice about buying it, since horror definitely isn't my thing. Sure, there is violence, and some of it horrific in nature, but Thomas uses it with purpose to make the reader sit up and think and take notice. I will definitely look out for Mr Thomas' other titles. He's just gotten himself a new fan.
This is an amazing book. Beautifully written, intricately plotted and with fully realized characters. It beautifully captures a time and place in both a boy's life and of an era in history. In other words, this book a rarity- a truly well written, fully executed novel with unforgettable characters. There are so many mediocre books on the market now, it's wonderful to find one that is truly exceptional. This is that book. I read it in less than 24 hours because I simply could not put it down.
Liked the book didn't love it. Wished we had followed the German into his past, but it was not to be.
The German is extremely well-written and thought-provoking. It deserves all of the accolades it has received. Thomas does an excellent job of showing how people's fear of the unknown clouds their judgment to, sometimes, tragic proportions. The book does move at a very slow pace, however, so be prepared.
Lee Thomas is a fantastic writer and this novel just reinforces it. Full of mood, mystery, suspicion and sorrow, all wrapped up in a pretty bow. His prose is clean. The characters have serious depth. Afraid to talk too much about the story since the synopsis sums it up well and I don't want to give any surprises away. Love the themes it explored as well and the ending was foreseeable but made sense knowing what happened to The German in his past. Go grab it!
