When Amy escaped the prison cell she’d been trapped in for years she had no idea how hard it would be to live again. Six months after the man who kept her hostage died she is still looking for a way to break free from the shadow of fear that keeps haunting her.

Guilt hurts, and it’s left Rich lost. He is drinking in a bar with his friends when he sees a girl who prods him out of the listlessness he’s been trapped by since he turned himself around from a bad guy to a good man. She’s beautiful, but she’s hesitant and nervous. It's attractive, though. She’s sweet. But he doesn’t know what her awkwardness and her fleeting smiles hide, and when she asks if he’s a good guy, he isn’t sure what to say. He didn’t used to be.
Fate plays some cruel games…

The story dragged a bit at the beginning but once the action started it held my attention. I am a sucker for a happy ending and this lived up to it.

This is the first book I have read from this author & it was only as I was reading it & trying to put the pieces together I realised it is actually part of a series .. I think I would definitely have benefited from reading the previous two because the story includes aspects that happened then. However I was able to continue & get the gist of it.

We hear from both Amy & Rich .. they each tell their side of the story. It’s pretty deep in places, includes some steamy scenes as well as some heart wrenching moments. It started well & the descriptive writing surrounding the funeral of Rich’s best friend showed his vulnerability & gave him the option of changing from the bad boy into a more caring guy.

I found the whole concept of the abduction & subsequent moving on a bit rushed but it gave a basis for the story & interlinked the people. The fact they were both ‘hurt/used’ by the same person (Ryan) is an interesting twist & it is fate that brings them together.
Easy to read, nice to pass the time & a cute ending.
Thanks to the author & Xpresso Book Tours for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest opinion.
I’ve always enjoyed Jane Lark’s books, mostly her Historical romances, so this was a great jump into her contemporary YA romances for me. I know about her NA series, Starting Out, which I haven’t gotten around to but this will definitely have me looking around to it soon enough, because we see many of those characters in this story so I know for sure that series isn’t going to disappoint. And I believe this book is a start into a new series if it’s not exactly part of the Starting Out series……? It’s like a sequel from what I’m reading it as.

But this story was absolutely something different from what I’ve been reading but also had that something that I have read before too from other contemporary romances and the same with thrillers and suspense novels. I love that the blurb caught my interest when I first read it, and that it kept me interested as I got into the story from the first page and kept me on the edge of my seat waiting for something explosive to happen. This story is deep. Like it’s messed up but not messed up too, just lots of heart pounding and goosebump rides.

The suspense of what happened to Amy and of her past was what kept me turning the pages and the fact that Rich wanted to know those dark secrets too was another addition to the thrill of solving this mystery and following it through to the end. I liked that there wasn’t a lot of information about what happened but more of a growing suspicion of the dark and gritty past to Amy, and that it wasn’t just thrown at you all at once like many stories that I’ve read would have done. I love that this story actually built up to it and slowly unraveled so that we were introduced to its suspense at the same time or a little before Rich also finding out about it. And I supposed this story being told in first person perspective really helped in they way this story was told worked to its advantage too.

So yeah, I really liked this story and how it was set up and told in this way, and having us see more of Rich’s view really built the thrill factor and maybe the suspense too of what’ll happen if the truth were to come out very intense. Both these characters were amazing. I felt like I knew them, like I was part of their lives, and actually cared very much for their safety and well being. I was invested. They felt really real to me and had depth to their character. Both are very likable and are definitely great people but both had very dark pasts that they had to over come and break away from. And it was a very dark past they both had, which immediately connected them.

Both these characters went through hell and rose back up from the ashes of their past and showed how strong they are by moving on and changing who they were, yet they still held the pain and memories because of their connection. Both were also very vulnerable and scared of this new normal because they were never given the chance to actually live their own life, per se, and with uncertainty lingering in the future, it’s scary for these two young people starting new.

I really liked Rich for his honesty and understanding ways. Sure he was the “bad boy” who’s made a turn around into a nice guy but I totally was game for him because truly he was a nice guy through and through to the bone, he was just in line for the thrill of being bad. He’s atoning for his past and Amy is part of that. I love that he’s patient with her and is gentle and not pushy. He understood what happened, or at least knew some stuff and didn’t pressure her to reveal her secrets no matter how much he wanted to ask and know but also with wanting share with her everything about him. He took it slow and though hard as it was, because we want it to be quick and over with, I respect him for taking his time. It made it realistic and more personal on an understanding level through the dilemmas they have to work through.

Amy is a survivor. She lived through hell and had to grow up from a child to an adult super early. I am glad she is strong and was able to change and move pass the horror she went through. Though she is very vulnerable and doesn’t trust men easily, Rich made it safe for her to be herself and stop looking over her shoulder. She is still a child in a way to me but who is mentally older for her young age which made me really sad. But I love that she is brave and has determination in taking the next steps to change her life despite her fears and doing things she has never done before. She has a lot of healing to do and though Rich is the post to help her in that healing, he’s also the one to bring her the most pain from the past.

So what do I think?

This definitely is a must read from me. It’s very deep and dark and can be trigger releases for those who have been in similar situations of abuse and harm. But it is filled with lots of hope and forgiveness through healing, love, and support from family and friends. And for me I loved the suspense and mystery and romance, and was all in for that thrill of a ride.
I had a difficult time deciding how I should rate this book. At first, I was leaning towards three stars. However, when I sat and thought about it and went back through my notes I realise that it deserved four stars. My decision to read this book was solely based on the synopsis. I have been in a reading slump lately and I figured that this would be the book to take me out of it.

Free Me tells the story of Amy and Rich. Amy was in an abusive relationship since she was fifteen years old. She was held against her will and forced to live through unspeakable horrors. The only good thing to come of this ordeal was her daughter Christa. She managed to gain her freedom six years later when her jailer was killed in a motor vehicle accident.

Rich blames himself for the death of his best friend Ryan, who died in a motor vehicle accident. Rich was driving at the time. To him Ryan was everything. He was like a brother, confidant and friend. At least, that was what he believed until Ryan’s brothers took that illusion away from him.

Fast forward six months later, Amy is celebrating her twenty-first birthday. Her friends in a bid to help take back control of her life took her to a bar to carry out the celebration. While there she met Rich. In spite of the pain, they both experienced in the past it was difficult for them to deny their attraction to each other. Initially, Amy was wary of getting too close to Rich. However, the more time she spent with him she realized that he was nothing like her ex-boyfriend. Rich knew he probably was not good enough for Amy after the life he led but he could not stay away. The one thing they didn’t know was that their past were linked through the one person they both wished they had never met.

There are several things that I enjoyed about Free Me. First of all, I liked that the story was told from dual POVs. This allows readers to have a view of what is taking place in each of the character’s minds. This provides for a better understanding of what they are feeling making it easier to connect with them. The next thing I enjoyed was the character development. They demonstrated growth and strength in times of adversity. Rich realised the mistakes that he had made in the past and he was trying his best to make up for it. It’s my belief that he turned his experience with Ryan into something positive. It helped to shape him into the person he had become. Although he experienced some amount of guilt as a result of Ryan’s death, Rich did not allow it to control his life.
I lift my hat to Amy. She has been through hell and back. I can’t begin to imagine being at the mercy of a psychopath for six long years, with no hope of escape. She reminded me of a quote by
C. Joybell C.

“The strength of a woman is not measured by the impact that all her hardships in life had on her, but the strength of a woman is measured by the extent of her refusal to allow those hardships to dictate her and who she becomes.”

A few persons may find it unrealistic that after going through such an ordeal that she would want to get involved with someone so soon. At first, I had a problem with it; but as the story progressed, I realised that this was her way of proving that not all men were like her ex.

Free Me had a strong and unique storyline. The story was gripping and it flowed smoothly. However, there were points where it moved a bit too slow. I was hoping for more information on the matter relating to Amy’s abductors. I know they finally got what was coming to them, but it would have been great to see how the events played out.

There is more to Free Me than just romance. It’s a story about courage, secrets, survival, second chances, love, forgiveness and healing. If you are looking for a story that will pull you in and keep you engaged I recommend that you get a copy of Free Me.
