Desiree Roselynde Chronicles edition by Roberta Gellis Romance eBooks

I've read and re-read all of the Roselynde Chronicles so I was surprised to see this listed as book seven. I was even more surprised that it actually should have been between Roselynde and Alinor but it can be read as a stand-alone. After reading the other reviews, I can see how the rating is so varied - the are all right. - Although I don't consider this another brilliant historical; great but not brilliant!

Desiree is the wife of aged Lord Frewyn; she is a wife in name only. Frewyn married her to save her from another lord who would have taken over her estates after the death of her father. Frewyn has been ill for some time and cannot manage her estates. He has instructed Desiree to write to Simon Lemagne the Sheriff of Sussex to send a Castellan to help manage the property.

Alex de Baydaun de Lessai is the youngest son of Simon Lemagne's sister, before her death she gave him a letter and encouraged him to leave Normandy and travel to England to ask his uncle for a position. Alex will have no portion as the youngest son and his brothers have abused him for years. Vachel is the worst and actually tries to find the letter from his mother, fortunately Alex kept it with him and he realizes that Vachel intends to harm him so he leaves home with only his clothes and his old horse. Fortunately Simon has a place for him and due to Alex's loyalty and dedication he is chosen for the Castellan position.

When they arrive and realize that Desiree is young enough to be Frewyn's daughter, Simon warns Alex to keep his distance. This is a wonderful story and as always the characters are well written and the story line is great.

This is actually one of Ms. Gellis' lighter novels, there few historical figures other than Prince John who hates Simon (See Roselynde) - it's a great read.

Desiree Roselynde Chronicles edition by Roberta Gellis Romance eBooks Reviews

Roberta Gellis wrote a historical romance series back in the 1970's called the Roselynde Chronicles. Eventually it became six novels, all well-researched and set in the times of Kings Richard and John, based around a fictional family with strong willed women and the men who loved them. What set them apart from other romances is that the author knew what she was writing about and the historical background which gave the series a depth and base that made it just as much fun to read the details as with the romance between the leads. Now in 2005 she returns to these books with a story set in the long running feud between King Richard, and his sneaky younger brother John. This time, the hero is a nephew of Simon Lemagne, the youngest son of a large brood who has come to England to make his fortune. Alexandre Baudoin hasn't much to his name except a letter to his uncle, and a strong will to succeed. He's been bullied by his elder brothers, and has fled France as soon as he could, and joined his uncle in England. Simon has fared far better than Alex -- he's married a rich heiress, and discovering that he likes what he sees in his nephew, helps Alex out by grant him the castellanship of a holding that he wants prepared against an invasion by the French. Desiree, the lady of Excaet, is young and pretty and has been watching her beloved husband die by inches. But when she meets Alex, she finds her marriage vows severely tested by this handsome knight, and how the pair of them deal with this unexpected passion provides the romance in the novel. There is also Alex's landless brother, Vachel, who is more than willing to conspire with Prince John for his own fortune, and coupled with his hatred for his brother Alex, makes for an interesting villain. Gellis stays within the style and writing of her earlier novels, and compared to what sort of thing passes for historical novels these days, this is one of the better ones out there. Fans of the series will rejoice to see Alinor and especially Simon make a reappearance. It also looks as though the entire series is being brought back into print as well.
I was surprised to see a new book in the venerable Roselynd series, which I have read and re-ead off and on over the years, always with fresh pleasure and feeling as though the characters were old friends. However, as other reviews have mentioned, this book is a pale imitation of the other books in the series. Both the main characters seem shallow and immature, and the villains inept. It's almost impossible to love the good guys and detest the bad guys. Desiree will need to work hard to measure up to the other ladies of the family.
I can see now why this book, when it was first released in print, wasn't readily available -- I doubt the publisher did a huge print run. "Desiree's" plot didn't seem as skilfully woven as we've come to expect from Ms. Gellis. The bad guy didn't have the clear-cut, "I'm in it for me, and here's why" motivation that her villains usually have. Additionally, the main characters lacked a certain snap and sparkle. Mind you, Ms. Gellis' worst book is generally better than most folks' best...

I've been wanting to read this one for quite a while, as there was quite a time gap between the stories of "Roselynde" and "Alinor", both of which I love. I'd say, yes, read this one, if only to see what a topflight author can produce when she's at 95% of game, and then go read the others in the "Roselynde" series, for a treat.
